Taste and See that the Lord is Good

Speak Lord; I’m Listening – Daily Bite-Size Encouragement – Day 20

Taste and Smell

When we lose our sense of smell, our taste usually follows. “That’s because the olfactory area in our nose controls both. When we chew our food, odor molecules enter the back of our noses. Our taste buds tell us if our food is sweet, sour, bitter, or salty. If we plug up our nose, food doesn’t taste the same because we can’t smell it.” R

“To our brains, ‘taste’ is actually a fusion of a food’s taste, smell and touch in a single sensation. Smell not only influences but is an integral part of flavor.” S

Taste and Sight

“Although sight is not technically part of taste, it certainly influences perception. Food is identified by the senses of smell and sight, not taste. Food can be identified by sight alone – we know a strawberry by sight, we don’t have to eat it to verify.” S

We can see a chip, and our mouth will begin to water because of the high salt content.

Taste and See the Lord

What does it mean to taste and see that the Lord is good?

O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! ~Psalm 34:8 NASB

Those of us who know the Lord know His goodness. Let me explain. Can you see the wind? No, but you can see the effects of the wind on the trees. Can you literally taste the Lord? No, but you can sense His Presence, and it is sweet. His goodness is all around us – like the wind. Though we do not see it one way, we definitely perceive it!

We can experience the Lord through our five senses:

  • Sight (vision) – through our eyes
  • Hearing (auditory, sound) – through our ears
  • Smell (olfactory) – through our nose
  • Taste (gustatory) – through our tongue
  • Touch (tactile) – through our hands

We can experience the beauty of the Lord through His gorgeous creation – nature and artwork (sight). We encounter the Lord through awesome worship, praise, instrumental music, and our and others’ singing (hearing). We know various flowers, foods, perfumes, and even weather scents such as rain (smell). We savor foods and drinks (taste). We learn soft, hard, smooth, and rough through our skin, primarily through our hands (touch).

5 Senses and God

“Our devotions and prayers are usually spoken, and maybe include a visual, but we can find other stances to be useful to both kids and adults. For example, laying prostrate on the floor lends to different prayers than standing with arms wide open.” C

“For the ancient Jews, the sense of smell was a key part of tradition of their worship. The familiar scents evoked thoughts of God’s holiness, love, and redemption.” Throughout church history, the church installed elaborate stained-glass windows or built soaring cathedral with intricate artwork that bring us to our knees in awe of the God who inspired them.” C

God’s world is astounding and spectacular! We can see and experience His handiwork all around us, and through His beautiful world, we can taste and see that He is good.

What is one way you perceive the Lord today through your senses?
