Name Above All Other Names

Speak Lord; I’m Listening – Daily Bite-Size Encouragement – Day 11

A name is an important part of our identity. Above all else, it tells people who we are and helps distinguish us from others.

What’s in a Name?

“Our names are an incredibly important part of our identity. They carry deep personal, cultural, familial, and historical connections. They also give us a sense of who we are, the communities in which we belong, and our place in the world.”1

“A name, or identity, is a powerful thing. It is a descriptor that allows people to make quick judgments and assumptions about us. While we can understand the harm of assumptions, for the human mind it is a fast way to categorize a lot of information in a short amount of time.” 2

A Name above all other Names

There is a Name above every other name. God in His sovereignty, exalted Jesus Name above all other names in the past, present and future. “God highly exalted Him [Jesus], and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”3

I am so thankful that Jesus is King and Lord. “Give thanks to the Lord of lords; for His loving kindness endures forever.” And in His loving kindness, He calls us [His own] chosen and faithful, “The Lamb will overcome…for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings, and those who are with Him are called chosen and faithful.”4

Above All Else

It is important to know who we are, but it is even more significant to know Whose we are. When we don’t know who we are, we can waste essential years wandering about without purpose. Our lack of identity has consequences that are far reaching.

When we know our identity in Christ, we gain a beneficial and powerful understanding that sets us on a trajectory of purpose that is eternal. Above all else, I pray that you know who you are, and most importantly, Whose you are.

  1. I thank you for drawing me back to Whose I am. I know that solidly yet I so easily forget and meander on my own way. His Name is above all names, including mine.
I have recently moved across three states and am seemingly starting all over again with friends and church family. I have cousins here; thus the move to be near family. But my name comes up all the time because I am introducing myself to strangers. Yet, God knows where I am and that I belong to Him. He is the key to my identity.
    Thanks

    1. I pray it is a smooth transition for you, Linda. Moving and transitioning into a new place can be unsettling, yet there is such grace, comfort, love and kindness from our dearest Friend.

  2. So true, Lisa! “When we don’t know who we are, we can waste essential years wandering about without purpose.” I’ve wasted a bunch of years; but I believe now the best is yet to come.

  3. So important for us to remember Whose we are. Our time here is too short to waste wandering and without any purpose. I pray I fulfill His purposes for my life to the glory of His Name. Thank you for sharing your post!

    1. It is so freeing to understand Whose we are, Joanne! And I agree, I am so thankful that He give us purpose. And our very lives are a sweet, fragrant aroma to Him and bring glory to His Name.

  4. I agree, his name is so powerful! Thanks so much for sharing your post at the Exploring World Religions Linkup 15 so that we can better understand each other through our religion, faith, or beliefs. Pinned and/or shared!
