To compromise is “to settle differences by mutual agreement.”
Compromise and Agree Legally
Jesus encourages us to settle legal matters quickly.
“Come to terms quickly [at the earliest opportunity] with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way [to court], so that your opponent does not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you are thrown into prison.” ~Matthew 5:25 AMP
“But avoid stupid and foolish controversies and genealogies and dissensions and wrangling about the Law, for they are unprofitable and futile.” ~Titus 3:9 AMPC
“But let your Yes be simply Yes, and your No be simply No; anything more than that comes from the evil one.” ~Matthew 5:37 AMPC
Do Not Compromise Spiritually
Elijah and the pagan prophets had a non-compromising meeting at Mount Carmel. Elijah refused to compromise and called the people to worship God in purity.
“Elijah approached all the people and said, ‘How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.’ But the people did not answer him [so much as] a word.” ~1 Kings 18:21 AMP
Jesus called us to treasure Him above all else.
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord].” ~Matthew 6:24 AMP
“Whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus [and in dependence on Him], giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” ~Colossians 3:17 AMP
We can honor God out of a heart of love.
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.” ~1 John 4:18 NASB
Compromise and Communicate
When we compromise by reaching mutual agreement, we bring harmony of mind or legal conformity.
“Do two walk together, unless they have agreed?” ~Amos 3:3 WEB
“But refuse (shut your mind against, have nothing to do with) trifling (ill-informed, unedifying, stupid) controversies over ignorant questionings, for you know that they foster strife and breed quarrels.” ~2 Timothy 2:23 AMPC
Let us set our hearts and minds to honor the Lord out of love, to compromise with each other by reaching an agreement before going to court and refusing to quarrel over senseless and futile things.

Lisa, I kind of took a leap with this. I hope it’s ok with you.
They say I should compromise,
and be thereby willing
to turn away, avert my eyes
at an infant’s killing.
They say that I may keep belief
(the VP made that clear!)
and keep my tongue behind my teeth
when something God holds dear
is swept aside into a bin
of soiled medical waste,
that abortion’s not a sin
and that my distaste
is reactionary, blind,
the dunnage of medieval mind.
Moral truths are not to be compromised, Andrew!
Good Scriptures on this Topic. Thank you.
I’m glad you found them helpful, Ellen.
Love your title!
How often have I dug in my heels and firmly set the my-way-or-the-highway look on my face hoping that someone will see things my way? Sigh.
There is a time to compromise & a time to stand fast. Fortunately, the Bible teaches us the difference.

So true, Barb! I think culturally we have been taught compromise is a negative, but really compromises very definition is finding agreement. Obviously, there are areas of truth that cannot be compromised, but I think the majority of issues we “fight for” are trivial and if we walked in basic communication skills, we would all be much happier.
This is an excellent lesson on how to compromise. When I read the title, it threw me off and caught my attention. God’s Word provides instruction for how to compromise, something I had not thought about in a while. Thanks!
It is amazing how we culturally have a negative connotation towards compromise, Rhonda, but really compromise can be a positive movement to mutual agreement. And you’re right, God’s Word provides instruction in how to live together in unity.
