We must maintain our vigilance in prayer before God’s throne.
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” ~Micah 6:8 NASB
God asks us to stand for justice for the weak, poor, and fatherless.
“Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.” ~Psalm 82:3-4 WEB
God asks us to love kindness, and He defines kindness as ministering in love to orphans and widows. Kindness is also walking in purity before Him which takes the power of the Holy Spirit.
“Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” ~James 1:27 NASB
“For God’s Kingdom is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.” ~Romans 14:17 WEB
God requests us to ask, seek, and knock, so that He can answer, reveal Himself, and open the doors of heaven.
“Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.”
“Or who is there among you who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! Therefore, whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them, for this is the law and the prophets.” ~Matthew 7:7-12 WEB
While it is monumental for us to maintain our vigilance in prayer for the powerless, let us remember the focus is the Lord. The Ancient of Days, the Creator of the Universe calls us to humble ourselves and pray. God can do anything. Yet, He calls us to draw near and to pray, so that He can respond, forgive, and heal.
“And if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” ~2 Chronicles 7:14 NASB
We can maintain a posture of faith because of God’s faithfulness. We stand on who He is as the Faithful and True One.
“I know the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted and justice for the poor. Surely the righteous will give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence.” ~Psalm 140:12-13 NASB
“Then hear from heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.” ~2 Chronicles 6:35 WEB
“Then hear in heaven their prayer and supplication, and defend their cause and maintain their right.” ~1 Kings 8:45 AMPC
“Then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven, Your dwelling place, and defend their cause and maintain their right.” ~1 Kings 8:49 AMPC
Are we willing to maintain a posture of humility and prayer before the Lord on behalf of the powerless?

We see them out there every day,
the poor, whose life is hard.
We want to help, we’ll find a way,
but not in my backyard.
We want to be compassionate,
like the Christ of Virgin Birth,
but nonetheless we’re passionate
’bout what homes would be worth
if those people were not well-contained
with their noisy families,
kids playing on the swings they chained
to their front lawn trees?
Christ held the destitute so dear,
but He didn’t mean we’d have them here!
Compassion and its expression can be so revealing of our hearts, right Andrew?
“We must maintain our vigilance in prayer before God’s throne.” I have read this today more than once and not in connection with FMF. Excellent post, Lisa. Maintenance requires careful inspection to take note of where we have broken down. But then we must go further. We must make corrections in those areas before the break or failure is worsened. May we be diligent to maintain our our walk with the Lord.
Wise advice and godly counsel, Joanne!
it is so easy to forget to pray for the powerless…. because it just seems so unending, like there is no resolution. Thanks for the reminder we are to persevere. FMF11
May the Lord strengthen us, Annette.
