How to Stand Amazed in God’s Presence

Stand Amazed

Amazed by God’s Love

In the song, “I Stand Amazed in the Presence,” the chorus proclaims:

“How marvelous! How wonderful!

And my song shall ever be;

How marvelous! How wonderful!

Is my Savior’s love for me!” ~Charles Gabriel1

Charles Gabriel wrote this song out of gratitude for Jesus sweating blood in the Garden of Gethsemane. Gabriel wrote the song after he read the account in Luke.”2

“And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, ‘Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.’ Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.” ~Luke 22:41-44 NASB

God’s love evokes a song of praise to rise up in our hearts for how wonderful and marvelous He is to us.

How to Stand Amazed in the Presence of a Holy God

God’s love is so incredible, we are compelled to respond to Him in thanksgiving, praise, and adoration.

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thinks to Him, bless His name.” ~Psalm 100:4 NASB

Amazing Thanksgiving

Amazing Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving and gratitude are a choice. While gratitude is an emotion of the heart, thanksgiving is an expression or acknowledgement for something good that is done for us.

“Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!” ~Psalm 95:2 AMPC

“Through Him [Jesus Christ] then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.” ~Hebrews 13:15 NASB

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High.” ~Psalm 92:1 NASB

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples.” ~Psalm 105:1 NASB

Amazing Praise

Amazing Praise

Despite how we are feeling, we can praise the Lord for His goodness, His love, His presence, and His mighty power. Praise is an expression of honor, glory and exaltation.

“Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens. Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to [the abundance of] His greatness. Praise Him with trumpet sound; praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with tambourine and dancing; praise Him with stringed instruments and flute. Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with loud cymbals. Let everything that has breath and every breath of life praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!)” ~Psalm 150:1-6 AMP

“Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praises.” ~James 5:13 WEB

“Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our [gracious and majestic] God; praise is becoming and appropriate.” ~Psalm 147:1 AMP

Amazing Adoration

Amazing Adoration

Adoration is ‘the act of addressing’ God as in worship. Adoration can be expressed through bowing, kneeling, or laying prostrate.

“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.” ~1 Chronicles 29:11 NASB

“Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” ~Psalm 95:6 NASB

“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.” ~Psalm 115:1 NASB

“Your name, O Lord, endures forever, Your fame, O Lord, throughout all ages.” ~Psalm 135:13 AMPC

In the song, In the Presence of a Holy God, Kent Henry inspires us to gaze upon the Lord in the beauty of His holiness.

The Chorus:

And I cry holy, holy, holy God

How awesome is Your name

Holy, holy, holy God

How majestic is Your reign

And I am changed in the presence of a holy God.

In the song, 10,000 Reasons, Matt Redman calls our souls forward to bless the Lord because He is worthy of our worship.

The Chorus:

Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul

Worship His Holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul

I’ll worship Your Holy name.

I pray your spirit, soul and body are encouraged to give thanks, praise, worship and adoration to the One Who is worthy of all honor.

  1. That’s a good distinction between gratitude and thanksgiving. When we don’t “feel” gratitude, spending some time in the psalms or time thinking about what God has done in our lives can fill our hearts with praise.

    1. So true, Barbara! When we spend time focusing on Him, cultivating our hearts in delight for Who He is, praise springs up like a fountain.

  2. Lisa, truly amazing post! (no pun intended) I love how you shared the difference too between gratitude and thanksgiving, this is so important! Yet there truly are no words to express our amazement at all God is for us!

  3. Thank you for the insights. I loved the distinction between gratitude and thanksgiving. And also praise.. I love those momemts where I can just stand in his presence and praise him.

  4. What a fabulous message Lisa! Boy, am I ever amazed in God’s presence. I love how we can praise God no matter the circumstance. I love the song 10,000 Reasons, I find myself frequently singing it in my head daily when I’m praising God. It always seems like I have a song for him in my heart and mind going on.
Thank you for linking up with Sweet Tea & Friends this month my friend.

    1. God’s presence is awesome, Paula! What a joy it is to praise Him all through the day! Thanks for hosting Sweet Tea & Friends, Paula.

  5. Lisa, I love how you broke things down in this post.

And this, “Thanksgiving and gratitude are a choice. While gratitude is an emotion of the heart, thanksgiving is an expression or acknowledgement for something good that is done for us.” I’d never quite defined Thanksgiving and gratitude this way before, but it resonates with me!

    1. I’m so glad you were encouraged, Jeanne! May the Lord help us grow in both thanksgiving and gratitude.

  6. Beautiful post that covers our thanksgiving and our songs of praise to God!

    Psalms 69:30
I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

  7. “I Stand Amazed in the Presence” is one of my favorite songs! Thanks for sharing this reminder of what a privilege we so often take for granted in freely worshiping our astounding God!

  8. “Despite how we are feeling, we can praise the Lord for His goodness, His love, His presence, and His mighty power.” As we take time to think about who God is and all He has done for us, we can always find reason to praise the Lord. Wonderful post!
