10 Powerful Prayers to Empower Your Writing

Prayers for Writers

As Christian writers, we desire to honor the Lord and encourage others with our writings. We can face the ebb and flow in our creativity, the blank page writer’s block, and stewardship issues that every writer faces. Let us pray these ten prayers to encourage and empower us in our writing journey.

#1 – Acknowledge God’s Sovereignty

Lord, we acknowledge You are “the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth [who] does not become tired or grow weary. You measured the waters in the hollow of Your hand, and marked off the heavens with a span [of Your hand], and calculated the dust of the earth with a measure, and weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills in a pair of scales. The nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales.”

“Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult or too wonderful for You. You who show lovingkindness” to us as writers. As the “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” we acknowledge all our help comes from You.1

#2 – Seek Divine Assistance

Lord, You say, “Ask, and it will be given to us. Seek, and we will find. Knock, and it will be opened for us. And in the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because He makes intercession for us according to God.”

Lord, fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit, the “Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor – Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in [Jesus] name, [and] He will teach us all things.” Lord, teach us how to write that Your Name might be glorified, Your people encouraged, and the lost drawn to You, the Savior of all who come to You.

So we wait for You, Lord, who will give us new strength, causing us to mount up with wings like eagles, so that we will run and not get tired, we will walk and not become weary as we seek You and find help from You about our writing projects.2

#3 – Cultivate Inspiration, Creativity, and Originality

Lord, we ask for the Holy Spirit to fill our minds, kindle a fresh fire in our spirits, and release our souls to create life-giving stories that reflect Your beauty. Guide our thoughts to honor Your wisdom, align with Your grace, and express Your love.

Let the word of Christ dwell in us, with all wisdom and thankfulness in our hearts to You. Let us walk in wisdom from above that is “pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, and without hypocrisy.”3

#4 – Embrace Stewardship and Perseverance

Lord, You say that whatever we do, we should work heartily, as for You and not men, because we serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Lord, help us not to “grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in.”

“Just as each one of us have received a special gift [a spiritual talent, an ability graciously given by God], [we desire to] employ it in serving one another as [is appropriate for] good stewards of God’s multi-faceted grace [faithfully using the diverse, varied gifts and abilities granted to Christians by God’s unmerited favor]” for Your glory.

Lord, we desire to be faithful stewards in our writing. Teach us to steward our time, talent, and testimonies wisely. And “let endurance, steadfastness, and patience have full play and do thorough work so that we may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.”4

#5 – Honor the Craft of Language for Clarity

Lord, we desire to have the pen of a ready or skilled writer. Lord, help us choose life-giving sentences that gently lead our readers. Help us to craft words, sentences, and paragraphs that honor Your Name. We offer every outline, draft, and final copy into Your hands. Let us be Wordsmiths that paint a picture that resonates with Your heart of love.

Lord, help us choose simple words that bring clarity to our hearts and avoid empty clichés, gossip, and destructive words. We desire to build up and not tear down. Give us the grace to study grammar, confidence to experiment with various forms of writing, discernment to edit any excess, and an eye for detail.

Lord, help us go to the next level in our writing. “My heart overflows with a good theme; I address my verses to the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.”5Stencil.instagram Profile Photo 2025 04 25T103011.954 300x300

#6 – Pursue Excellence and Integrity

Lord, You say, “He who walks in integrity and with moral character walks securely.” And “the integrity and moral courage of the upright will guide” us. And that we “are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, and we may proclaim the excellence of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Lord, we want everything we do to bring glory to You, “for we have regard for what is honorable, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.” We pray the content of our writing will match Christ’s character and our heavenly Father’s nature. 6

#7 – Truth and Courage to Vanquish Doubt and Fear

Lord, You “did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [You have given us a spirit] of power and love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].” Therefore, we will “be diligent to present ourselves approved by You as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.”

Lord, teach us to exchange every fearful thought for the truth of Your Words of Life that we might write courageous words without arrogance, share convicting truths without condemnation, and share our faith in love. Lord, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, we will fight the good fight, finish our course, and keep the faith because we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.7

#8 – Trust God’s Sovereign Timing to Balance Ambition and Contentment

Lord, we desire to walk by faith, not by the influence of bestseller lists; therefore, we resolve to trust you from the conception of an idea to its completion in publication. We choose to rejoice in You, laying ambition at Your feet, refusing to lose sight of eternity. We choose to trust Your timing for promotions and seasons of rest. We choose for You to lead and guide us throughout the writing process. Your goodness and lovingkindness will follow us all the days of our lives, and we will dwell with You forever.

Lord, You called us to freedom, and we do not want to use our freedom as an incentive for our flesh or as an opportunity or excuse for selfishness, but to serve one another in love. Lord, we “devote ourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving; praying at the same time for us as well, that You will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ.”8

#9 – Writing as Worship and Ministry

Lord, may our every word bring glory and honor to You, for “the heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the works of Your hands. We will come in the strength and with the mighty acts of the Lord God; we will mention and praise Your righteousness, even Yours alone.”

Through Jesus Christ, “let us constantly and at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name.” For “worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory, honor and power; for You created all things and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

Let the words from our pens be an act of worship to You. And as a Wordsmith, may our words encourage the fainthearted, strengthen the weary, and infuse life into every reader’s spirit, soul, and body that their lives are transformed and Your kingdom advanced.

“Let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, our rock and our Redeemer for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. [Let us speak] the truth in love, [that we may] grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.”

#10 – Releasing Our Work and Its Impact into His Hands

“O Lord, You are the Father; we are the clay, and You our Potter, and we all are the work of Your hand.” Lord, we commit our words and lives to You and trust You to establish them.

Lord, we commit our words of life as seeds to You. Lord, whether we plant or water the hearts of our readers, we recognize that You bring the fruitfulness in their lives. We ask that truth will fall on good soil and yield much fruit, for You are “not unjust to forget our work and the love which we have shown toward Your name, in having ministered and in still ministering” to Your people through our writings.

Lord, we release our writings and their impact into Your hands, knowing that You have planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds. Whether our words impact people today, tomorrow, or sometime in the distant future, we trust You will use our words to set the captives free and to draw others to You. Amen.

Encouragement and Empowerment

May these ten prayers encourage you as a Christian writer. May the Holy Spirit strengthen, encourage, and empower you to write unto Him and declare His words of life to the world.

  1. Each point is so true. This one hit especially close to home: “Lord, we ask for the Holy Spirit to fill our minds, kindle a fresh fire in our spirits, and release our souls to create life-giving stories that reflect Your beauty. Guide our thoughts to honor Your wisdom, align with Your grace, and express Your love.” If He’s not in it, I don’t want to write it. Thank you for the wisdom you shared here today! It’s a good reminder to help keep within the lines.

  2. These are beautiful practices, Lisa. And can be applicable to so many areas of our life! Thanks for your own spiritual discipline of writing so thoughtfully as you share with others.

  3. Lisa I so appreciate your encouragement and insights within. Such wise words for us Christian writers to live with.
Thanks so much for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friends this month dear friend.

  4. Thank you for these, Lisa! These prayers address the challenges and encouragement writers (creators) face, and how to focus on God even before we begin our first words.

  5. These are so thought provoking, Lisa. I was just listening to a podcast in which they were contrasting striving to be “the best” with the better practice of striving for excellence.

God is sovereign even over the way our words are received by the world!

  6. Lisa, I loved this whole post. I’m definitely bookmarking it to return to again and again.

This in particular resonated with me: “Let us be Wordsmiths that paint a picture that resonates with Your heart of love.” Ever since I heard Max Lucado talk about being a Wordsmith, I have wanted to be the same – but only if people can see Jesus through my words.

  7. Thank you, Lisa for such powerful prayers! I have bookmarked this post to return to again and again. Thank you for helping me stay focused on God as my sufficiency in my writing, remembering He is faithful. It is His work not mine!

    1. What a comfort to know He sustains us in our writing, Donna. And a great relief to know He is sufficient and faithful to supply our every need in our writing endeavors.

  8. Lisa, every point and prayer is well taken and needed. I appreciated this post. May we not throw words around carelessly, but be certain they are God;s truth and will. This is a post I have saved so I may return to it often. Thank you and may the Lord bless you as you continue to write!

    1. Thank you for your encouragement, Joanne! I pray the Lord will continue to bless you in your writing endeavors!
