“Who do you say I am?” This is the question Jesus asked Peter. And Peter responded, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”1
Through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, Peter knew who Jesus was – the Christ, the Messiah. In the desire to cultivate revelation of who Jesus Christ is, let us see who Jesus Christ revealed Himself to be to His disciples as recorded by the Apostle John.

I Am the Light of the World
Darkness brings uncertainty, chaos, and fear. As the Light, Jesus brings certainty, order, and peace. By revealing Himself as the Light of the World, Jesus illuminates hearts and minds.
“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” ~John 1:4 WEB
“There it was – the true Light [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] which, coming into the world, enlightens everyone.” ~John 1:9 AMP
“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’” ~John 8:12 NASB

I Am the Bread of Life
When Jesus stated He is the Bread of Life, He proclaimed He was essential to our existence, the sustenance we need to experience life.
“Jesus replied to them, ‘I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].’” ~John 6:35 AMP
“I am the Bread of Life [the Living Bread which gives and sustains life].” ~John 6:48 AMP

I Am the Door
As the Door, Jesus declared His exclusive nature as the only route of salvation, the gateway to an eternal relationship with God.
“So Jesus said again, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that I Myself am the Door for the sheep.” ~John 10:7 AMPC
“I am the Door. If anyone enters in by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture.” ~John 10:9 WEB

I Am the Good Shepherd
As the Good Shepherd, Jesus conveyed His love, care, and intimate knowledge of the Believers, who were likened to sheep. He communicated His desire to protect them from harm, guard them from evil predators, and faithfully provide green pastures and clear streams of water.
“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” ~John 10:11 NASB
“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father know Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.” ~John 10:14-15 NASB

I Am the Resurrection and Life
His resurrection proved His claim as the Son of God, the One who “canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.”2
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will still live, even if he dies.” ~John 11:25 WEB

I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life
Jesus embodies truth and life as the incarnate Word of God.
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.’” ~John 14:6 AMPC

I Am the True Vine
In and through Jesus Christ, we can bear lasting fruit; without Him, we can do nothing.
“I am the true Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.” ~John 15:1 AMPC
“I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me], you can do nothing.” ~John 15:5 AMPC

I Am the Messiah
Jesus acknowledged He was the Messiah sent from God the Father.
“The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ –the Anointed); when that One comes, He will tell us everything [we need to know].’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you, am He (the Messiah).’” ~John 4:25-26 AMP

I Am versus Buddha and Confucius
Dwight L. Moody shared the difference between Jesus Christ, Buddha, and Confucius through a converted Chinese man’s experience:
“My son,” he said, “This is a dreadful place.”
“Yes,” I answered. “I fell into it; can’t you help me out?
“My son,” was his reply, “I am Confucius. If you had read my books and followed what they taught, you would never have been here.”
“Yes, father,” I said, “But can’t you help me out?” As I looked up, he was gone.
I soon saw another form approaching me, and then another man leaned over me, this time with closed eyes and folded arms. He seemed to be looking to some far-off place.
“My son,” Buddha said, “Just close your eyes and fold your arms, and forget all about yourself. Get into a state of rest. Don’t think about anything that can disturb you. Get so still that nothing can move you. Then, my child, you will be in such delightful rest as I am.”
“Yes, father,” I answered. “I will when I am above ground. Can’t you help me out?” But Buddha, too, was gone.
I was just beginning to sink into despair when I saw another figure above me, different from the others. There were marks of suffering on His face. I cried out to Him, “O, Father! Can’t you help me?”
“My child,” He said, “What is the matter?”
Before I could answer Him, He was down in the mire by my side. He folded His arms about me and lifted me up; then He fed me and allowed me to rest. When I was well, He did not say, “Now, don’t do that again,” but He said, “We will walk on together now” – and we have been walking together ever since. ~Dwight L. Moody

I Am Prayer
Lord, we ask you to reveal Yourself to us afresh and anew so that we might know You as: the Light of the World, the Bread of Life, the Door, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, the True Vine, and as Messiah. Open the eyes of our hearts to see You, Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. Amen.
